Panhala fort is also identified as Panhala gad, it is placed on the hills of Sahyadri ranges. The fort is closely allied with the great Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The historical blocks of this place were also connected to Queen of Kolhapur Rani Tarabai. Thefort was built during 12th century by Shailahara king Bhoja II. Expansion work to thefort was carried out by Ibrahim Adil Shah. Later during 19th century the fort came under control of British Rule.
Panhala fort had three magnificent gates, namely Teen Darwaza, Char Darwaza and Wagh Darwaza. The main structure of the fort contains Andhar Bavadi, Ambar khana, Sajja Kothi ,Kalavanticha mahal. Andhar Bavadi is a hidden well; it was the main source of water of the area.
It is a three storied well having staircase. There are hidden ways to escape inside this well. Ambar khana is like a ware house, collection of granaries. Sajjakothi and Kalavaticha Mahal are buildings built in Bijapur architectural style. Many people visit all around the area and explore the history of Maratha and Adil Shahi reign.
